Sony Announced the Company's Refreshed Lineup of E-Readers

Sony today announced the company's refreshed lineup of e-readers and new touchscreen technology ups the ante over its competition. New versions of its 5-inch Pocket Edition, 6-inch Touch Edition and 7-inch Daily Edition are being introduced. All three come with touchscreen support and the new higher-contrast E-Ink Pearl display already seen on the new Kindle and Kindle DX.

The 5-inch Pocket Edition (model PRS-350) will come with 2GB of internal memory, a microUSB port, support for a number of text formats including PDF and EPUB, 6 adjustable font sizes, and a battery good for about 2 weeks worth of reading. Available in silver and pink, it is now available for US$179.99

The 6-inch Touch Edition (model PRS-650) is very similar to its smaller sibling but aside from the larger display, adds SD and Memory Stick Duo expansion slots, a headphone jack, and support for MP3 and AAC audio files. Available in black and red, it will sell for US$229.99.

The new Daily Edition will have double onboard memory to 4GB and will come with 3G connectivity from AT&T, Wi-Fi, improved battery life (up to 27 days on a single charge with wireless off). Final price has not been set but should be around US$299.99. It is expected to come later this fall.

With its latest models, Sony definitely shows its still in the game. While the touch screen technology really does bring the best of both the E-Ink and LCD worlds to an e-reader, the higher price may be a deterrent that holds consumers back. On the other hand, if the idea of touch navigation—swipes to change the page, for example—is a must-have feature, the extra dollars may be worth it.

iPad for Sumo Wrestlers

After years of fat-fingered struggles to type emails and text messages on tiny mobile phone keypads, Japan's sumo wrestlers have been given Apple's iPad to pound with their jumbo-sized digits.

With the sport's reputation tarnished by recent scandals, the Japan Sumo Association is distributing about 60 iPads among all the 51 training stables and top association officials from this week to help improve communication.

And it's a giant leap for a super-sized sport that has until now relied on old-school modes of telephone and fax machines.

"It seems rather easy to use," association chief Hanaregoma said following a brief training session on the popular tablet gadget. "Sending emails was very easy."

A digital novice himself, the 62-year-old former wrestler admitted that while he can read incoming text messages on his mobile phone, he doesn't know how to write replies and does not usually use a computer.
But "time flies if you play with this", he said of the Apple gadget.

The iPad was chosen because the sumo association believed the device was big enough to cater to wrestler's fat fingers, unlike the miniscule keys on cellphones, media reports said.

Iomega Makes Full Switch to USB 3.0

Iomega is implementing USB 3.0 technology integrated into all their products. Iomega says the change will not cost consumers a penny more in retail cost but will deliver faster transfer speeds.  USB 3.0 has a theoretical max of 5Gbps but according to guys at getusb.info it only shows 70MB/s as best performing drives at the moment.

Iomega continues their promise of better performance with not only speed performance, but now a “drop spec” of up to 7 feet before you can expect any kind of damage or malfunction with the device.

Iomega’s drives come in 500GB and 1TB size starting at just $119.
